The job market in Luxembourg, while tightening over the last two years, continues to offer numerous opportunities for young professionals. With a population of 680,000 and almost 40,000 companies, the country remains a particularly dynamic employment hub. Sectors such as IT, finance and healthcare are constantly seeking new talents. Recruiters are particularly keen on junior profiles with technical and cross-disciplinary skills.

The job market situation for young people in Luxembourg

The job market for young people in Luxembourg is constantly evolving, driven by strong iconic sectors and a relatively stable economy. According to the latest ADEM figures, the unemployment rate for those under 25 stands at 20% in 2024, up from 17.3% in 2023. This is well above the European average of 14.8% in 2024. This difference highlights the challenges facing young Luxembourg workers in their market characterised by high competition and increasing demands for technical and language skills.

The job board, Moovijob.com, lists over 1,000 job offers for juniors (with no experience)! In terms of salary, young graduates can expect around €40,000 to €50,000 in tech, €45,000 to €55,000 in finance, €35,000 to €40,000 in healthcare, and €30,000 to €38,000 in construction.

Sectors hiring the most junior profiles

Although all sectors are represented in Luxembourg, some are constantly in need of new talents, particularly for junior profiles.

According to recent data from Moovijob.com, and despite what you may hear, the construction sector stands out with over 500 job openings available.

The finance sector also offers numerous opportunities, with nearly 50% of job offers accessible to young graduates with no experience.

In IT, we report over 150 positions for young professionals with up to 2 years of experience, around half of which are in development.

In the healthcare sector, more than 300 positions are available for young profiles.

Most sought-after profiles

In a cosmopolitan country like Luxembourg, fluency in several languages is a major asset. French remains the most sought-after language (required in 70% of job ads), followed by English (32%). Although German is on the increase, it is still in 3rd place, with around 25% of job offers on Moovijob.com requiring a good level of this language, particularly in the industrial sector. Luxembourgish, highly demanded in the healthcare and administrative sector, comes in 4th place and accounts for 13% of the job offers on the job board.

Regarding education, trends have shifted since 2023. While Bachelor's degree holders accounted for 27% of demand last year, Master's graduates are now the most sought-after, accounting for over 30% of job offers. Companies therefore prefer candidates with a higher level of education to occupy positions of responsibility or specialisation.

Job market trends for juniors

Young graduates show a high degree of professional mobility, exploring various sectors and regions to enrich their experience and seize new opportunities. They also seek an optimal work-life balance, with a preference for remote work and flexible working hours. A key trend is their desire to maximise their income while working as little as possible, so that they can invest in leisure and travel. Young people are also attracted to companies committed to sustainable development and corporate social responsibility (CSR), aligning their career choices with their personal values.

Tips for young job seekers

To stand out, young professionals need to adopt several key strategies.

Networking like a pro: using platforms like LinkedIn and taking part in job fairs for young professionals like Unicareers, organised by Moovijob.com, are musts for meeting recruiters and professionals from various sectors.

Lifelong training is also essential to stay at the top of the ever-changing job market. Regularly updating your skills, particularly in high-demand fields, helps meet the growing demands of employers.

Finally, internships and apprenticeships are real stepping stones. They offer valuable practical experience, help you acquire specific skills and establish professional contacts. In particular, they enable you to gain significant initial experience and thus increase your chances of finding a permanent job.
