January 2024 - Luxembourg's meal vouchers policy is undergoing a major transformation with new rules being applied on the use of meal vouchers and meal cards. Moovijob.com reveals the latest changes affecting employees and employers from the start of the year.
A value of 15 euros per ticket
The first major change is the increase in the total value of each meal voucher, which can now be set at 15 euros. This is a significant increase, giving employees the opportunity to enjoy better-quality meals without having to pay more out of their own pockets. However, the decision to adopt this increase will depend on the individual assessment of each employer.
Extension of the meaning of a meal
From the 1st of January 2024, what is considered a meal will extend beyond restaurants to include the purchase of food products and ready-made meals in supermarkets. This change allows meal cards and vouchers to be used in a wider variety of outlets, from supermarkets to partner restaurants.
Use outside working hours and days
Another significant advancement is the possibility of using meal cards and vouchers outside working hours, offering greater flexibility to beneficiaries, whether at the end of the day, on weekends or during public holidays.
A maximum of five meal vouchers to be used daily
The daily limit of meal vouchers that can be used per day has now been increased to five. This change means that employees can spend up to 75 euros a day (with each meal voucher worth 15 euros).
Total digitisation by 2025
Luxembourg is slowly preparing to enter the era of full digitalization of meal vouchers. And while these benefits are already available in digital format, the full transition is planned for the beginning of 2025.
The issuers’ vision: Edenred and Pluxee (formerly Sodexo)
Edenred Luxembourg is ahead of the game, issuing its last paper meal voucher in September 2023. 100% of employees in Luxembourg receiving Edenred meal vouchers now get them on their card, enabling the possibility of paying directly with their mobile phone through applications such as Apple Pay and Google Pay.
Pluxee, the market leader in Luxembourg, estimates that two-thirds of its beneficiaries have already switched to the digital format. Pluxee's digital solution offers a card in partnership with Visa as well as a mobile payment option.
In 2024, Luxembourg is embarking on an innovative chapter in the field of food benefits. Between increasing the face value, extending the possibilities of use, and full digitalisation, these changes aim to offer workers and employers a more flexible and sustainable experience when it comes to food benefits.
