The role of a sales representative

Sales professionals play a key role in a company's economic development. In Luxembourg, their skills are highly sought-after, whether in business-to-business (B2B) or business-to-consumer (B2C) sales.

The salesperson's role may seem simple at first glance: to sell a product or service.

In reality, their day-to-day responsibilities are much richer. They must understand and anticipate their customers’ needs, provide relevant solutions, and above all, build long-term relationships based on trust.

If you enjoy interacting with people, thrive on daily challenges, and are looking for a dynamic and varied career, then a sales role might be perfect for you!

Key responsibilities of a salesperson

Daily, a salesperson:

  • Prospects for new customers and develop their portfolio;
  • Identifies needs and offers tailored solutions;
  • Negotiates terms and conditions, and closes deals;
  • Retains existing clients and ensures satisfaction;
  • Monitors performance through KPIs (Key Performance Indicators);
  • Meet (and exceed) set targets:
  • These may be monthly, quarterly, or annual goals, such as revenue targets, client acquisition numbers, or product volume sold. Targets are often linked to bonuses, making motivation absolutely crucial.
  • Attends professional events.

This profession demands strong interpersonal skills: communication, persuasion, active listening, but also resilience in the face of rejection.

A good salesperson is also well-organised, autonomous, persevering, and has in-depth knowledge of their product or service and the market.

Education and skills

Sales roles are accessible at various levels of education, with career paths varying from country to country. Here is an overview of the most common training courses:

These courses can be supplemented by specialised certifications (in sales, CRM, negotiation, etc.), which are useful for career changes or upskilling.

A sales representative is a profession that combines technical expertise with essential human qualities.

On the technical side, it's vital to master sales techniques, know the products/services, use CRM tools effectively, and analyse performance indicators (KPIs).

But that’s not all: soft skills are just as crucial. A good salesperson listens, builds trust, and demonstrates perseverance, composure, adaptability, and strong organisational skills.

This job requires both strategy and emotional intelligence.

The different types of sales professionals

B2B salesperson:

They work mainly with companies, local authorities, and professionals. Their negotiations tend to be more complex and sales cycles are typically longer.

B2C salesperson:

They deal with individuals, tailoring their approach to consumer needs and focusing on quicker sales.

Inside sales representative:

Mainly office-based. They manage prospects and customers by phone, email or video calls, and may also handle existing accounts.

Outside sales representative:

They are often out in the field, either at their customers' premises for face-to-face meetings, or at trade fairs or events, to develop their network and make direct sales.
