The University | About us...

The Geometry, Representations, and Algebra via Computation and Experimentation (GRACE) Doctoral Training Unit covers a coherent set of themes in Mathematics and Computer Science, with a focus on number theory and cryptographic applications, geometry, representations, and logic. The common feature of the projects in GRACE is to use computational methods - from computational modeling to proof assistants - to supplement more traditional methods of mathematical investigation.

The GRACE consortium, coordinated by the Mathematics Department (DMATH) of the Faculty of Science, Technology and Medicine (FSTM), in collaboration with FSTM's Department of Computer Science (DCS), has an opening for:

8 PhD positions, co-financed by a grant from the Luxembourg National Research Fund.

Research areas of the program and the PhD advisors currently recruiting:

Computational number theory and cryptographic applications

  • Jean-Sébastien Coron (DCS)
  • Antonella Perucca (DMATH)
  • Gabor Wiese (DMATH)

Modelling and computational experiments in geometry

  • Karin Melnick (DMATH)
  • Jean-Marc Schlenker (DMATH)

Algebraic geometry, representation theory and logic

  • Pieter Belmans (DMATH)
  • Sarah Scherotzke (DMATH)
  • Bruno Teheux (DMATH)

Additional remarks:

  • Most positions are funded by the Fonds National de la Recherche Luxembourg (ref. PRIDE23/18686085/GRACE)
  • Administrative questions should be addressed to
  • Scientific questions should be addressed to the corresponding potential PhD advisor (we suggest contacting the potential supervisor in any event)

Your Role...

The successful candidates will be expected to conduct research under the guidance of professors (names and areas of expertise listed above), with the aim of obtaining a PhD in mathematics. They will also be expected to contribute to the department's many activities, including seminars, teaching, outreach and various other research related events.

Our departments offer an outstanding and dynamic environments for PhD candidates, with multiple seminars, working groups, colloquia, and a doctoral school which also grant access to multiple training opportunities, including some not only focused on mathematics.

What we expect from you…

  • Master's Degree (or equivalent) in mathematics or mathematical aspects of Computer science, with very good results. (The degree must be obtained before the beginning of the contract but you can apply before)
  • Good command of written and spoken English
  • Strong dedication to doing mathematics at a research level
  • Interest in using computational methods for mathematical investigations. Some familiarity with programming will be considered a plus

How to apply...

Applications should be submitted online and include:

  • Letter of motivation
  • A ranked list of up to three PhD advisors from the above list (with motivations for the choices)
  • Full CV
  • Transcript of academic records and copies of diploma
  • Names of at least two references who are willing to write a letter of recommendation on the candidate's behalf (they may be contacted by us)
  • Any other relevant documents

Early application is highly encouraged, as the applications will be processed upon reception. For full consideration, please apply by July 31, 2024. Please apply ONLINE formally through the HR system. Applications by email will not be considered.
