About us...

The University of Luxembourg is an international research university with a distinctly multilingual and interdisciplinary character.

The Faculty of Humanities, Education and Social Sciences (FHSE) at the University of Luxembourg brings together expertise from the humanities, linguistics, cognitive sciences, social and educational sciences.
People from across 20 disciplines are working within the
Faculty. Along with the disciplinary approach a very ambitious interdisciplinary research culture has been developed. The faculty's research and teaching focuses on social, economic, political and educational issues with the common goal of contributing to an inclusive, open and resourceful society.

The Department for Behavioural and Cognitive Sciences at the Faculty of Humanities, Education and Social Sciences (FHSE) at the University of Luxembourg aims to understand fundamental aspects of human cognition and behaviour, and how these relate to societal and individual-level challenges.

The BayesCompare project is a FNR funded project on Bayesian comparisons between artificial and natural representations to improve our understanding how natural and artificial intelligences process information. The project is led by Heiko Schütt and will employ one PostDoc and one PhD student.

About the role...

You will develop new Bayesian methods to compare deep neural network and other artificial representations to each other. By applying the new techniques to state-of-the-art architectures, you will test our new methods against existing ones and apply them to achieve better understanding of the processing within deep neural networks. You will also work on visualization of results and using the insights to improve models. You will package effective methods to make them available to other researchers.

Your profile...

  • Master's degree in cognitive science, data science, statistics, computer science or a related field
  • Enthusiasm for interdisciplinary research & research methods
  • Strong analytical skills and a collaborative mindset
  • Experience with (Bayesian) statistics, deep neural network models, Kernel Methods, or data science
  • Experience with models of human perception or cognition, especially visual perception
  • Experience with programming, especially in Python, Pytorch and/or statistics libraries

In return you will get…

  • Multilingual and international character. Modern institution with a personal atmosphere. Staff coming from 90 countries. Member of the "University of the Greater Region" (UniGR)
  • A modern and dynamic university. High-quality equipment. Close ties to the business world and to the Luxembourg labour market. A unique urban site with excellent infrastructure
  • A partner for society and industry. Cooperation with European institutions, innovative companies, the Financial Centre and with numerous non-academic partners such as ministries, local governments, associations, NGOs …
  • Doctoral education in a formal program with courses and a thesis supervision committee of three experts for every student
  • A topic of broad interest for the machine learning and neuroscience communities
