Nowadays, both parents work to provide and take care of their family. It is therefore imperative to figure out a way to take care of the children. The day nurseries are still the first option of parents to take care of their children while they are working in Luxembourg. However, more and more families are interested at taking care of their children at home or at a nanny’s. Several parents are thus posting job offers.
As a nanny – sometimes abbreviated “assmat” in French – you will take care of one or more children day or night, depending on the needs of the parents and your availability. Most nannies are women and there are very few men. Your main assignments as a nanny will be to help children with daily tasks – such as dressing, washing, eating, and so on – and accompany them in their early learning – namely walking, talking, colorizing, for instance. A nanny must be pedagogical and patient. You will furthermore ensure the safety and well-being of the children. Cooking meals and making a report of the children’s day to their parents are a part of your daily routine.
You need to have a nanny authorization to be eligible for this position in Luxembourg. Having a diploma is not obligatory though. The state certificate of nanny or Technical certificate specialized in early childhood educational support are strongly recommended. As a nanny, there is not really any opportunity of career development in your job. However, you can decide to do a new training course to become a Health / Medical Care / Social services professional – such as education assistant, educator, childcare assistant, just to give a few examples. The Technical certificate specialized in early childhood can also lead to an Auxiliary nurse position.
As a nanny, you have a wide rage of possibilities: work at part time or full time, independently or work in day nurseries and kindergartens, for Services for business or individual consumers companies, municipal day-care centers, and so on.
