Are you about to write or update your CV? Great decision. Here's our advice to help you (re)start on solid ground and create a clear, professional and impactful document. Because a strong CV is already a step closer to landing your dream job.
The header: the first thing recruiters see
First things first, make it easy for recruiters to get in touch. Include your up-to-date contact details, and don’t forget to add the correct international dialling code (+33, +352, etc.). It may seem like a small detail, but it’s crucial, especially in a cross-border region like the Greater Region.
One of the first things recruiters look for is your desired job title. So make sure it’s clearly stated, after all, a CV without a title is like a letter without an address.
You can also add a short introductory line with a clear and concise pitch that highlights who you are, what you're looking for, your availability and your willingness to relocate if applicable.
Example: Recent graduate in digital marketing, seeking a 6-month end-of-studies internship starting in September, available in Luxembourg or for remote work.
Finally, be honest about your current location. If you live far away but are mobile, say so directly in your header. It helps avoid any confusion.
Another increasingly common addition is a link to your LinkedIn profile. This shows you’re transparent about your background and that you've taken the time to build a professional online identity.
The key sections
We recommend the following structure: Work experience > Education > Skills > Additional information.
If you have little professional experience, start with your education. If you’re more experienced, lead with your work history to highlight your expertise.
Both your experience and education should always be listed in reverse chronological order, most recent first.
In the "Additional information" section, feel free to include volunteer work, interests or personal projects, as long as they add value to your profile. For example, having captained a competitive sports team says a lot about your leadership and teamwork skills.
Describing your experience
A good CV makes the recruiter want to know more, without overwhelming them with endless bullet points. Here’s a simple but effective structure for presenting each role:
Job title
Company name, city (and country if needed), and duration.
(sector, subsidiary or department)
- Managed B2B client relationships
- Produced weekly reports for the sales department
- Implemented a sales tracking tool
If you’ve held multiple roles across various clients, avoid overly detailed lists. Group your experiences by domain, or only include the most relevant ones.
To guide you, study job descriptions for the roles you’re targeting, especially the "profile" or "requirements" sections. A strong CV anticipates the recruiter’s questions. In just a few lines, it should demonstrate that you have the skills, experience and professionalism needed for the job.
There’s no need to specify the type of contract. Instead, mention how long you held each position, for instance, "1 year and 3 months" is often clearer than listing start and end dates.
A polished layout makes a great first impression
A well-designed CV is easy to read. Keep the layout consistent by using the same structure for each experience, uniform date formats, highlighting key words in bold, and leaving enough white space between sections.
Here are a few practical tips:
- Choose a professional font such as Helvetica, Arial or Garamond.
- Avoid quirky fonts like Comic Sans MS or Courier.
- Stick to one font and a maximum of two colours.
- Keep your CV to one page, two at most for experienced profiles.
You can opt for a classic layout using Word, or explore ready-made templates on platforms like Canva.

And don’t forget to rename your file clearly: "CV Julie Martin – Senior Accountant", for example. It helps recruiters identify your profile quickly, and improves your CV’s visibility in search results.
A good CV is clear, well-structured, tailored to the role you're applying for, and showcases your strengths without going over the top. And most importantly, keep the CV up to date.
