In this series of articles, discover various professions you can find in Luxembourg.
The role of a driver
The driver profession encompasses several key roles that are essential to the smooth functioning of both our economy and daily life. Whether it’s transporting goods, people, or ensuring deliveries, drivers play a central role, often behind the scenes, but always indispensable.
Behind every shop, bakery, restaurant, construction site, online order, bus ride, taxi trip, or emergency ambulance journey, a driver is there to ensure the safe transport of people or goods.
Education and skills
Driver jobs are accessible right after secondary school, depending on your chosen specialisation. Vocational qualifications, such as the Certificate of Professional Competence (CPC) for Road Transport, the Professional Baccalaureate in Transport, or other professional certificates, enable quick entry into the workforce.
To work in Luxembourg, multilingual skills are a must, given the country’s diverse clientele. You may need to switch between languages several times a day.
French, English, German, and Luxembourgish are highly valued, while additional languages are a real asset for international transport.
As their vehicle is their primary work tool, a driving licence is mandatory to practise this profession, and a strict respect for traffic regulations is essential.
Depending on the type of vehicle driven, different licences are required. For example, a truck or van driver needs a category C licence (or C1, CE, C1E), which corresponds to additional qualifications depending on trailer size or vehicle gross weight limits.
Key soft skills include punctuality, reliability, and good physical condition. Customer service and interpersonal skills are vital for passenger transport roles.
Good to know:
- Anyone wishing to work as a professional driver transporting goods or passengers on public roads in Luxembourg, and whose licence falls under categories C or D, must complete a mandatory driver training (Code 95). This training is offered by the Driver Training Centre (CFC).
- If your licence was issued in France, Belgium, or Germany, no additional requirements apply compared to a Luxembourg licence. Driving licences from EU member states are valid in Luxembourg.

The different types of drivers

They may work for logistics companies, transport firms, or industrial businesses.
A category C licence is mandatory, along with additional qualifications such as ADR (European Agreement concerning the International Carriage of Dangerous Goods by Road). Certifications vary based on the type of cargo or gross weight limits (GVW).
For transporting hazardous materials, an ADR certificate is required.
Delivery driver:
This professional delivers packages or goods, often in urban or suburban areas. They plan routes, load vehicles, and handle customer interactions upon delivery.
Delivery drivers often face fast-paced schedules, especially in e-commerce.
Depending on vehicle type, either a category B or C licence is required.
Bus driver:
Bus drivers transport passengers on regular routes (urban, school, intercity) or occasional trips (tourism, events). They ensure passenger safety, adhere to schedules, maintain their vehicle, and act as a point of contact for information and assistance.
A category D licence is required for vehicles carrying more than eight passengers, such as minibuses. Additional qualifications may apply depending on passenger capacity.
Taxi driver:
Taxi drivers transport customers from point A to point B, delivering high-quality service. They must have a thorough knowledge of their area and demonstrate courtesy, adaptability, and discretion.
To work as a taxi driver in Luxembourg, you need a taxi driver’s licence issued by the Ministry of Mobility and Public Works (MMTP), in addition to a valid category B licence.
Private Hire Vehicle (PHV) Driver (VTC):
Similar to taxi drivers, VTC drivers usually operate via ride-hailing platforms (Uber, Bolt, etc.), offering a more personalised, pre-booked service.
A VTC professional card issued by the relevant authorities is mandatory, alongside a valid category B licence.
Personal chauffeur:
Working for a private individual or company, personal chauffeurs transport their employer or clients in a more discreet and demanding environment.
A driving licence suitable for the type of vehicle is essential.
