A brand-new Bachelor’s degree in Midwifery Sciences will be launched at the University of Luxembourg for the next academic year! Previously offered as a three-year BTS (Brevet de Technicien Supérieur) at ENSA, this new programme aims to enhance both the theoretical knowledge and practical skills of students, while addressing the specific needs of the Grand Duchy.

Becoming a midwife in Luxembourg until now

Up to now, the vast majority of midwives practising in Luxembourg have been trained abroad, mainly in France, Belgium, or Germany. While a three-year BTS was available in Luxembourg, this route has never been sufficient to meet national demand. Of the 60 students enrolled in the BTS Midwifery programme at the National School of Health (ENSA, formerly LTPS) between 2012 and 2018, only 24 successfully graduated.

As a result, according to figures from the Luxembourg Midwives’ Association (ALSF), around two-thirds of the approximately 230 practising midwives in 2022 were cross-border workers.

The COVID-19 pandemic highlighted the vulnerabilities of this system. Border closures and staffing pressures exposed the risks of relying too heavily on training and healthcare systems in neighbouring countries. This issue has also been observed in other medical fields: despite the introduction of a Bachelor’s in Medicine at the University of Luxembourg in 2020, the lack of a full medical curriculum still forces many students to continue their studies abroad.

A fully Luxembourgish Bachelor’s degree

From the 2025-2026 academic year, the University of Luxembourg will offer a four-year Bachelor’s degree in Midwifery Sciences, which will permanently replace the previous BTS provided by ENSA. Designed specifically to meet the needs of the Grand Duchy, this programme aims to strengthen the autonomy of the midwifery profession in Luxembourg and reduce dependence on neighbouring countries, while also responding to the growing demand for healthcare professionals specialised in midwifery.

The first promotion will welcome 15 students, with plans to quickly expand capacity. Applicants must hold a secondary school leaving certificate and demonstrate language proficiency at B2 level in both French and German, and A2 in English. This multilingual requirement reflects both the reality of the country and the nature of the course, which will be delivered 50% in French, 30% in German, and 20% in English.

The curriculum offers a comprehensive blend of theory and practice, with a strong clinical focus. Students will complete 47 weeks of internship, including a semester abroad, ensuring a rich professional experience in line with European standards. In addition, students will benefit from simulation laboratory training before working in real clinical settings, allowing them to gradually develop both technical and interpersonal skills.

Beyond the medical aspects, the course places significant emphasis on the psychological and social dimensions of the profession. As the programme director highlights, midwives may need to support patients facing domestic violence or perinatal mental health issues. It is therefore essential that the training also addresses the overall wellbeing of both mother and child.

Upon completion of the programme, graduates will have two options: to enter clinical or community practice immediately, or to pursue a Master’s degree to further deepen their expertise.

Thanks to this new Bachelor’s degree, Luxembourg will be able to train its future midwives locally, reduce its reliance on neighbouring countries, and respond more effectively to the needs of its healthcare system.
