Financial independence, new skills, first responsibilities, and sometimes even the discovery of a true career passion… Working during your studies has become a real springboard for many young people. And in Luxembourg, opportunities abound!
Who can work as a student in Luxembourg?
Luxembourg warmly welcomes students who want to combine work with their studies. To be eligible, you must be between 15 and 27 years old, enrolled in an educational institution (in Luxembourg or abroad), and following a full-time study programme. The cherry on top? Even after completing your studies, you’re allowed to continue working under student status for up to four months. The perfect chance to extend the experience and refine your career plans before entering professional life!
What types of jobs are available for students?
There’s a wide range of opportunities available, depending on your schedule, interests and the sector you're drawn to. During school holidays, many local councils offer seasonal jobs: administrative support, archiving, maintenance of green spaces, or even supporting events and activities. These roles are ideal for gaining a first professional experience in a low-pressure environment.
If you’d prefer to work during term time, part-time jobs in retail, hospitality, catering or tutoring are very common. Some students also find work on campus as student assistants or ambassadors. For those looking for roles linked directly to their field of study, paid internships or freelance assignments in sectors like IT, design or finance are becoming increasingly available. Fixed-term contracts and roles via recruitment agencies are also worth exploring.
What does the law say?
Yes to working, but in a secure and legal framework! In Luxembourg, having a contract is mandatory, whether it's for a job during school holidays or fixed-term work. The employer must also register the student with the Social Security Centre (CCSS).
The number of hours you're allowed to work depends on your working schedule:
- Two months at 40 hours/week;
- Three months at 28 hours/week;
- Four months at 20 hours/week;
- Or a total of 346 hours per year.
For underage students, specific rules apply: no overtime, working hours only between 6am and 10pm, two consecutive days off per week, and the contract must be signed by a legal guardian.
When it comes to pay, student workers in Luxembourg are not entitled to paid holiday, but they do receive a salary based on the country’s social minimum wage, which varies according to age. Those aged between 15 and 17 earn 75% of the minimum wage, while 17 to 18-year-olds receive 80%. From the age of 18 onwards, students are entitled to 100% of the minimum wage, based on a full-time, unskilled position (40 hours per week). It’s a welcome financial boost to help support your studies or fund personal projects!

How to land your next student job?
A strong CV, a well-crafted cover letter, and good preparation of your supporting documents: these are the keys to a successful application.
Tailor your CV to the Luxembourgish job market, highlighting your experiences, extracurricular activities, interests, and soft skills. A clean, professional design will always make a good impression. Your cover letter should be clear and concise, showing that you’re motivated, even for a fixed-term role. One page is plenty. Be sure to prepare your supporting documents (student ID, parental authorisation if underage), and above all: mention every student job on your CV, even short ones! These experiences are valuable and highly regarded by employers.
