You work in Luxembourg, and your child is about to begin higher education and you are wondering whether you can receive financial aid from Luxembourg? Frontaliers Grand Est informs you!

Can my child receive a study grant?

If you work in Luxembourg, your child is eligible for a study grant, under certain conditions:

  • They must be enrolled in a higher education programme that leads to a diploma, certificate, or proof of completion.
  • They must either work in Luxembourg, or be dependent on a parent who works in Luxembourg. Note: The worker must have been employed or have carried out their professional activity in Luxembourg for at least five years at the time of the student’s application for financial aid, within a reference period of seven years.

What does Luxembourg offer?

Luxembourg’s financial aid consists of both a loan and a grant

The state-guaranteed loan is €3,250. This amount may be increased depending on enrolment fees and social criteria, and reduced by the amount received as a grant. The State covers the difference between the market rate and a maximum of 2% which remains payable by the student. The loan must be repaid no later than 2 years after the end of studies, with a maximum repayment period of 10 years.

The grant is divided into four types: the basic grant, the mobility grant, the social grant, and the family grant.

Basic grant: available to undergraduate or graduate students who meet the legal requirements (eligibility conditions + program must include 15–17 ECTS credits, or the student must participate in at least half of the program).

The amount for the 2025/2026 academic year is €1,258 per semester.

Mobility grant: available to students enrolled in a higher education program outside the national borders of their household’s country of residence, and who can prove they bear the costs of renting accommodation. If the student lives in France and studies in France, they are not eligible.

The amount for the 2025/2026 academic year is €1,566 per semester.

Social grant: available to students whose total taxable household income is less than or equal to 4.5 times the gross social minimum wage for unskilled workers (€9,218.44/month).

The amount varies according to household income, but can reach up to €2,438 per semester.

Family grant: amounting to €301 per semester per student, is awarded provided that other children in the household also receive higher education aid. This grant is only paid during the summer semester.

Additional tuition fee allowance is possible, up to €3,800, half in the form of a grant and half as a student loan (if desired).

What if I don’t live in Luxembourg?

The student must complete all necessary procedures to apply for financial aid in their country of residence and attach the final decision from the competent authority.

This means applicants must provide certificates issued by the authorities of their country of residence, stating the amount of financial aid and other benefits they may be entitled to from their home country.

The scheme follows a principle of non-cumulation: any grant from the country of residence will be deducted from the Luxembourgish grant.
