About us

The University of Luxembourg is an international research university with a distinctly multilingual and interdisciplinary character.

The Faculty of Science, Technology and Medicine (FSTM) at the University of Luxembourg contributes multidisciplinary expertise in the fields of Mathematics, Physics, Engineering, Computer Science, Life Sciences and Medicine.
Through its dual mission of teaching and research, the FSTM seeks to generate and disseminate knowledge and train new generations of responsible citizens in order to better understand, explain and advance society and environment we live in.

The Department of Engineering (DoE) is a multidisciplinary department within FSTM, covering a wide range of fields including civil, electrical, and mechanical engineering, as well as geophysics. Its mission is to develop innovative technological solutions and promote sustainable and efficient resource utilisation, addressing the needs of Luxembourg and the Greater Region's industrial and public sectors.

The University of Luxembourg is seeking to hire a Doctoral candidate within the Department of Engineering of the Faculty of Science, Technology and Medicine under the supervision of Prof. Dr. Markus Schäfer in the field of Civil Engineering.

Your role

We are offering an exciting PhD position within the European Eurostars project HySCom, focusing on the development of next-generation hybrid composite columns made of reinforced concrete and structural steel combined with SFRUHPC. The project is conducted in close collaboration with a leading German industrial partner in the field of composite structures, providing a unique opportunity to combine fundamental research with direct industrial application.

Your main responsibilities will include:

  • Experimental material characterisation - concrete and UHPC
  • Development and optimisation of UHPC mixtures, e.g., steel fibre content
  • Design and execution of small-scale and large-scale experimental tests - push tests and column tests
  • Active laboratory work and coordination of experimental activities
  • Advanced 3D nonlinear finite element modelling using Abaqus, including ambient and fire conditions
  • Model calibration and parametric studies
  • Development of structural and engineering design models
  • Preparation of scientific publications and participation in international conferences
  • Contribution to teaching activities and academic engagement

For more information and details about proposed research topics, please contact Professor M. Schäfer ()

Your profile

  • Master's degree in Civil Engineering or a related field
  • Strong background in structural engineering and composite steel-concrete structures
  • Knowledge of construction materials, e.g., concrete, UHPC and material characterisation
  • Familiarity with Eurocodes - EN 1990, EN 1992, 1993, 1994
  • Experience with nonlinear FEM, preferably Abaqus, GMNIA
  • Interest in combining laboratory and numerical research

Language Requirements:

Applicants must demonstrate at least B2-level proficiency in the language of their thesis. For details and accepted certificates, please visit the Application for admission - Doctoral Candidates.
