Lead Process Engineer & Technology Development

About the Hiring Company

Our client is an innovative industrial company operating at the intersection of chemical and metallurgical process technologies. Active across Western Europe, the company is in a phase of significant growth: scaling its proprietary technology from pilot and demonstration stages to full industrial deployment.

This expansion is driving the need for experienced process engineers who can bridge the gap between R&D-driven innovation and large-scale plant design, commissioning, and operation. It's a rare opportunity to join a technically ambitious organization where your engineering expertise will have a direct, visible impact on the industrialization of next-generation process technology.

The Role

As Lead Process Engineer, you will work hand-in-hand with the Chief Process Engineer (Technologist), acting as a key technical contributor across the full lifecycle of the company's process technology ,from concept development and engineering design through to commissioning and ongoing plant operation.

You will be the go-to person for ensuring that process solutions are technically sound, well-documented, and consistently implemented across projects. This is a high-impact, hands-on role for an engineer who thrives on variety: one week you may be developing P&IDs, the next reviewing equipment specifications with suppliers, and the next overseeing commissioning activities on-site.

Key Responsibilities

Process Engineering & Design

  • Prepare input data for design organizations and review their deliverables for accuracy and completeness.
  • Develop block flow diagrams, process flow diagrams (PFDs), and piping & instrumentation diagrams (P&IDs).
  • Provide technical clarifications and documentation to support production line design.
  • Ensure consistency and completeness of all process documentation across projects.

Equipment Engineering & Supplier Coordination

  • Prepare technical specifications for key equipment and act as product owner for equipment design documentation (including mechanical design and strength calculations).
  • Supervise and lead the work of internal or external mechanical/design engineers and CAD modelers.
  • Support procurement by clarifying technical requirements and reviewing supplier inputs.
  • Collect and validate technical data from suppliers for integration into production line design.
  • Collaborate with engineering companies and equipment manufacturers on custom-designed equipment.

Commissioning, Operations & Continuous Improvement

  • Develop commissioning programs and monitor their implementation.
  • Conduct acceptance testing and provide technical support during installation and startup phases.
  • Participate in ongoing plant operations and process optimization.
  • Capture and document lessons learned; contribute to continuous improvement of process and technology.

Requirements

Your profile

Must-Have

  • Education: BSc or MSc in Chemical Engineering, Process Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, or a related field (Metallurgical Engineering, Materials Science).
  • Experience: 8–12 years in process or mechanical engineering design within the chemical or metallurgical industry , either within a design/EPC organization or on the owner/operator side.
  • Technical expertise: Proven experience developing block flow diagrams, PFDs, and P&IDs; ability to read and interpret mechanical drawings, isometrics, and engineering documentation.
  • Equipment knowledge: Strong understanding of process equipment design, specification, and selection.
  • Languages: Fluent English at a technical level (B2+ minimum).
  • Mindset: Product ownership mentality

Nice-to-Have

  • Experience with commissioning and startup of process plants.
  • Exposure to hydrometallurgical or pyrometallurgical processes.
  • Additional languages: Russian, Serbian, French, or German.
  • Experience collaborating with external EPC contractors and equipment suppliers.
  • Innovative thinking and a track record of contributing to process optimization or technology scale-up.
