As a speech therapist, you are a health care professional. Your patients can only be come on prescription. Your main assignment as a speech therapist is to correct speech development disorders, especially among children and teenagers. Among your daily assignments, you will have to follow up and accompany your young patients in all their problems with diction and pronunciation – such as stuttering, lisping, dyslexia, dysphasia, and so on – delayed speech for the youngest, or even dyscalculia – which represents digital learning disorders. In some cases, the speech therapist will also have to take care of patients with severe communication problems – such as people suffering from an autistic syndrome, for instance.
To access the job of speech therapist, you will need to get your diploma recognized. Generally, you will have this diploma after 5 years studying in the health field. In France, having a CCO – which means Certificate of Speech-Language Pathology – is essential to find a job in this sector. As Luxembourg does not offer much training courses for this occupation, you will have to study in another country to have your speech therapist diploma. However, if you want to find a job as a speech therapist in the Grand Duchy, you will need to have an approval of your speech therapy studies in Luxembourg.
Most professional opportunities of speech therapist in Luxembourg are offered on permanent contract by companies in the Health / Medical Care / Social services sector. The greatest employers in the region are hospitals and medico centers. You can find among them the Centres Hospitaliers de Luxembourg – or more commonly abbreviated CHL – which are regularly offering professional opportunities for this position. If you are not interested in working in a hospital, you can also work as a speech therapist in the civil service of the Government of the Grand Duchy of Luxembourg – via the GovJobs legal entity – or practice your profession as a freelance.
