One of the many assignments of an employer is to ensure the safety and health of his/her employees. The Luxembourg’s law forces every company to have a safety and health delegate. You can find some job offers with the designation of health & safety coordination or occupational health and safety referent – sometimes named “référent STT” in French. Work Health & Safety Officer is one of the exciting jobs in the great family of the Quality, Health, Safety and Environment business sector.

As a Work Health & Safety Officer, your main assignment is to identify occupational risks, implement preventive actions, and monitor them. This also involves raising employee awareness. In Luxembourg, the ITM – which stands for Inspection du Travail et des Mines in French and represents the Inspectorate of Labor – needs to advise on these topics and control the safety of Luxembourg’s employees.
In some business sectors where people mainly work in offices – such as Services – occupational risks are rare and known – namely fire risk or back problems, for instance. This is not a full-time job and the employee assumes this role in addition to his/her daily occupation.
There are, on the other hand, many risks that are almost permanent in other business sectors – and particularly on building sites. This is the sector where you will find most of the recruitment offers in Luxembourg – with job offers for permanent contracts among others. A specific example: before the opening of a building site, the contracting authority must submit a general plan and a specific health and safety plan – sometimes called PPSS in French. It may even be necessary to involve Engineering - Consulting skills to ensure that the risks have been fully considered in some cases.

The different companies of the country are classified by group or category regarding how many employees are working there. Companies having between 16 and 49 employees are in the B category while companies having between 50 and 1599 employees are in the C category, for instance. A specific formula allows to calculate how many delegates – or in this case called designated workers – who will have to work full-time in the company. Do not hesitate to submit your application. A recruiter will very certainly get back to you.
