As a dietician, you are a nutrition specialist and play an important role in teaching food hygiene to your patients. Your main goal is to give nutritional advice and help people eat in a healthier way and constitute a balanced diet. Some of your assignments are to develop menus adapted to your patients’ allergens or conditions, to calculate food basket, to advise and monitor patients.
You may work as a dietician in hospitals, community, private practice, or food research. Among the greatest Luxembourg recruiters, you can find the CHL – Centre hospitalier de Luxembourg in French meaning Luxembourg Hospital Center – the Robert Schuman Hospitals, Compass Group, or even Nutri'faz, for instance. To find a job and work as a dietician you must have at least an HND or equivalent specialized in dietetics or bioengineering with an option in dietetics. It is possible to continue your studies with a third year in order to deepen your knowledge.
Please note that in Luxembourg – as the job of dietician is one of the regulated trades – you need to have your diploma recognized before being able to work in the Grand Duchy of Luxembourg.
It is important to mention that there are few professional opportunities and there is not a lot of permanent contracts offers. There are indeed many more dieticians graduating each year than there are positions available, which is why few job offers are published. A beginner will first have an interim contract or replace another before finding a permanent position a few years later. Open your own office and work in private practice can be an option. A career development is still possible though. As a dietician, you can work in a hospital, in the caatering sector as a quality manager or become a teacher after passing a competitive examination specialized in social and family economy – named ESF in French.
