As a buyer, your main role is to purchase products that are crucial to the company’s activity you are working for – as well as to minimize the costs and reduce stocks. You will then need to do some sourcing in order to find the greatest suppliers or subcontractors and also meet the company's requirements. Your goal is to find the best value for money. As a buyer, you will need to master negotiation techniques. You should then negotiate delivery and payment deadlines, prices, quantities and so on – before placing an order. As a buyer, you should be curious and know your products to perfection, constantly monitor, participate in fairs to be always aware of the market’s novelties. You should also be diplomatic and have excellent interpersonal skills in order to build good relations with suppliers and settle problems when it is necessary.
As a buyer, you will work in the purchasing field – in the mass distribution sector, in a store, or a purchasing group, for instance. You can also work in the industrial sector as a buyer – in a major group, a SME, or in a purchasing department. In Luxembourg, you will find some employers such as Thomas & Piron, LGA Engineering or the CFL that are currently recruiting buyers.
You should know that it is rare to work as a buyer directly at the end of your studies. If you are a fresh graduate, you will probably work as Budget Assistant, Inventory Manager or even Procurement Officer, for instance. In the retail business sector, you will need an HND or equivalent to become a buyer. However, in the industry business sector, you will need at least a Bachelor or a Master’s degree. You must also master a foreign language – especially French and English – to work at an international buyer position.
You can also develop your career after several years of professional experience. You may indeed be eligible for a position in the Purchasing Management or become a Group Manager in the retail business sector.
Whether you are applying for a work-study or permanent contract of a buyer job offer, recruiters are waiting for your application! What are you waiting for?
