Two microphones, a childhood room, and an idea. That's how the adventure began for Philippe Biberich and Tom Bosseler, two childhood friends who became podcasting partners. Their journey? A friendship that started in high school in Luxembourg, studied together in Munich, and one day, a simple question: "What if we launched our own podcast?"
From classmates to podcast pioneers
Philippe and Tom share a long history of friendship. Their bond began in high school, grew stronger during their university years in Bavaria, and was solidified by a shared passion for podcasts.
Whether they were cooking or relaxing, podcasts were always by their side. But after listening to so many others, an idea took root: Why not become the voices people listen to?
Instead of rushing, they waited until 2020, when they returned to Luxembourg, to launch something real and authentic.
The beginning of a beautiful story
No high-tech studio, no soundproof walls… Just Tom's childhood bedroom, two microphones, two friends, and their very first test recording. This is where "Gëlle Fro" was born: a podcast that gives a voice to fascinating figures from Luxembourg.
They weren't interested in creating a show just about themselves: "Just the two of us chatting? That’d be incredibly boring," says Philippe. Their choice was a guest-based format.
For them, there was no need to target a niche: "Luxembourg is small enough to find incredible human richness. Our mission is to shine a light on that."
The name "Gëlle Fro" – a nod to the famous Gëlle Fra – literally means "golden question." It’s also a highlight in the podcast, where each guest asks a personal question to the community.
Finding the courage to step up to the mic
Philippe and Tom don't consider themselves to be stage animals: "We're pretty low-key," admits Philippe. Yet, they dared to step out of their comfort zone.
At first, everything was carefully planned. "Sometimes, we were already thinking of the next question while the guest was still talking. It was unsettling," confesses Tom. Today, their interviews are more spontaneous but never improvised. It’s this mix of discipline and flexibility that makes their conversations so genuine. Perhaps it’s their reserved nature that makes their guests feel at ease.
A lot of work… and proud to own it!
What might seem like a simple conversation is actually a complex, entirely self-managed project:
- Research and contact with guests;
- Pre-interviews;
- Technical setup;
- Recording & editing;
- Creating clips for social media;
- Publishing on social media;
- Community management.
"We still film with an iPhone," smiles Philippe. "No need for fancy gear. All you need is motivation and perseverance."
Every two weeks, a new episode is released. It easily takes ten hours of work per episode, depending on the complexity of the editing or promotion.
Their philosophy? Less is more. Editing only happens if absolutely necessary—often at the request of the guest. "We want to stay as authentic as possible. What’s said stays," emphasises Philippe.
The podcast isn't their main job, but a passion they nurture alongside their full-time careers. Both juggle their day jobs with the podcast. As Tom puts it: "I’m convinced you can do anything, as long as you know how to set your priorities. We spend so much time on social media... so why not spend a few hours on a project that really matters to us?"
Between controversies, quiz nights, and unforgettable moments
It hasn’t been all smooth sailing. One particular interview sparked controversy—an invited guest made controversial statements, which the media picked up, and some guests distanced themselves.
"A real shock," remembers Tom. But they learned an important lesson: the power of words, especially today. After the controversy, they had to work harder to restore their image and regain the trust of potential guests—an ongoing effort they tackled with transparency and perseverance.
And beyond the challenges, there have been gems: "My favorite? Our quiz nights. Teams competing against each other. That’s when we really feel the energy of our community!" explains Philippe.
For those who want to get started...
Their advice to those dreaming of starting a podcast?
"Just go for it," they say in unison. "No need for cameras or a studio. All you need is an idea... and a bit of audacity."
They still reach out to their guests via social media – like for that famous interview with the Cardinal of Luxembourg, who agreed... and even came back a second time!
Philippe and Tom represent a new generation of creators: passionate, committed, and curious about the world around them. Their journey shows that with a bit of courage, perseverance, and a lot of heart, it’s possible to turn a simple idea into a beautiful human adventure.
