Technical expertise, international missions and a professional field where creativity and precision go hand in hand: Philip Recktenwald’s career path shows just how exciting and diverse a career in engineering can be.

From theory to practice: the first step in his career

Philip Recktenwald is originally from Germany. His professional journey began in a traditional way with an apprenticeship as an electronics technician. Early on, he realised he had greater potential and decided to take things further. He switched to mechatronics, completed a dual Bachelor's degree programme in Bielefeld and then a Master of Science in Saarbrücken.

The dual study programme not only provided him with solid academic knowledge, but above all practical experience that prepared him perfectly for the professional field in which he wanted to work later. Internships, practical phases and real-life projects paved the way for his professional life.

Philip's decision to work in engineering was no coincidence. For one thing, he grew up with a father with an affinity for technology, who himself works in a technical profession. Secondly, he was fascinated from an early age by the combination of theory and practice, of mental and manual labour. He's particularly enthusiastic about electrics, programming and the world of computers: "Understanding what's behind a computer and then applying this knowledge in real life - that's what truly fascinates me."

Fun fact: Philip found his current job through the Unicareers fair, co-organised by the University of Luxembourg and Moovijob.com. Each year, shuttle buses are organised for the event, allowing young people from Belgium, France and Germany to attend free of charge. Philip himself took the shuttle from Saarbrücken.

High-tech meets creativity

Today, Philip works as a Project Manager at Waagner-Biro Stage Systems, a company that develops stage technology and automated control systems worldwide.

Stage technology encompasses all technical equipment and systems required for the operate stages in theatres, concert halls or on cruise ships. The aim is to implement creative stage designs safely and precisely, often fully automated and tailored to each production.

One particularly memorable experience for Philip was a seven-week assignment in Taipei, Taiwan, at the start of his career. "Culinary and culturally, it's something completely different, but in a good way," he shares. He worked intensively during the week, but weekends allowed time to explore the city and its culture. He found the collaboration with the local people and the opportunity to build new connections particularly enriching.

"You're not a tourist, but you're not a local either . That makes the experience truly unique."

From planning to the premiere: Philip's role in project management

Philip's daily work is varied and comes with great responsibility. He oversees projects from start to finish, always keeping an eye on technical details and a keen sense for smooth processes. His work centres on the C⋅A⋅T system, a complex control system for stage mechanics.

His tasks include:

  • Planning and technical design of the systems;
  • Collaborating with partners and clients;
  • Programming and configuring the control system;
  • On-site commissioning worldwide;
  • Safety inspections in collaboration with institutions such as TÜV.

His projects take him all over the world, from renowned theatres to ultra-modern cruise ships.

"There's si much more to stage technology than meets the eye. Entire buildings rotate, stage floors go up and down. The technology behind it is impressive."

As a Project Manager, Philip acts as a link between numerous departments and stakeholders. He works closely with logistics, development, external partners, and public authorities.

Looking ahead

Philip feels right at home at Waagner-Biro. For the future, he hopes to develop internally, take on more responsibility and improve his language skills. He's currently learning French to better navigate the international environment.

His personal tip for aspiring engineers:"These days, it's not just about the degree. Experience, skills and the willingness to take on responsibility are crucial. Gain practical experience! It's the only way to find out what really suits you and what doesn't."
