The photographer immortalizes moments and to do this, he/she must master image techniques, computer and digital tools and software. The missions consist in taking pictures, i.e. locate the right place, make the various adjustments (light, framing, angle of shot), then, retouch and rectify the image (red-eye, colour, contrast, etc.) with the help of software, and develop the photos using digital tools. Finally, the photographer will sell these pictures to individuals or professionals. A photographer may also decide to specialize in the photography of landscapes, animals, weddings, people, art, fashion, objects, etc. Depending on the projects, the photographer may work together with videographers.
As a photographer you may work in a press group, in a studio, in an advertising or communication agency or in a laboratory. However, many photographers decide to go freelance! In Luxembourg, companies such as Euro-Editions, Grand Format offer jobs as a photographer. You do not need specific degrees to be considered a photographer. However, if you want to convince your future employers or clients, you will have to show your portfolio, the competition is high. You will find few or no job ads published on job boards. This is the reason why it is better to follow a training course to learn the different techniques and tricks. In general, professionals possess at least a two-year technical degree (French BTS, DUT or equivalent) in Photography, which will allow you to work in a studio or do photo reports.
A photographer may progress into a lab, an agency or in a studio. He/She may also turn to iconography or become a reporter-photographer and why not journalist afterwards.
As a photographer you will have to stand out in a crowded market and put your focus on your work, to impress employers and recruiters.
