As an optician / spectacle maker – sometimes abbreviated OL in French – is a health professional and vision specialist. As an optician, you will advise and help your patient choosing their glasses – prescription glasses or sunglasses – lenses – monthly disposable or daily disposable lenses – or even accessories – such as products, spectacle cases, or strings for glasses, for instance. You will then guide each patient and suggest a specific spectacle frame depending on the facial morphology and also adapted corrective lenses – anti-reflective, UV filter, unbreakable lenses, and so on.
As an optician, you will make some adjustments – namely center the lenses, size and adjust the spectacle frame – while giving the glasses to the client. You will also make eye exams in addition to the results reported on the prescription of the ophthalmologist. The last assignments you will have to accomplish is to save the client’s file on a specific software and to support from an insurance company or complementary health.
Most of the time, you will work in a company specialized in the optical field. But you can also start your career with a job at a purchasing group or mutual insurance company. You must hold an HND or equivalent to look for a position of optician / spectacle maker in Luxembourg. You can also pursue your studies with a Bachelor’s degree to specialize in contactology or optometry. After some professional experience, you can evolve towards a position of Manager or become self-employed and open your own shop or a franchise.
