An economist is an expert in economic sciences, he/she knows how the economy works. Depending on the employer, job vacancies in Luxembourg are sometimes called "economic studies officer", or "economic development officer", or "statistician".
Concretely, the economist analyses many financial and economic data, sometimes social and political, to draw conclusions and recommendations, whether financial, budgetary or also institutional, environmental, etc... These are often recorded in reports, which can be used by companies to bring about change or by politicians to carry out reforms. It is good practice for economists to publish in specialist journals, preferably in English.
Jobs are often offered in finance, banking and consultancy/auditing firms. But we can also mention other workplace such as in government administrations, or in advisory and supervisory bodies such as the IMF, OECD, ... for example. The economist can also be a researcher/teacher.
As an economist, you are expected to like mathematics, and statistics. It is also important to have synthesis skills and be a good communicator. Regarding the educational background, universities are excellent ways to engage with top talents from Faculties of Economics, or Political institutes. In Luxembourg, employers mostly require profiles with a master's degree or PhD. Besides, knowledge in law or auditing techniques is considered an asset.
Some job advertisements offer work as a construction economist. In the construction or renovation of a building, the construction economist intervenes at all stages of the project, particularly upstream in the financial estimates, but also throughout to ensure that budgets are respected.
