A general practitioner welcomes patients in his or her office or at home. As a doctor, you will ask the patient about his/her health, ills – fever, pain, cough, and so on – auscultate the patient – taking blood pressure, listening to the heart, and so on – during the consultation. Right after this examination, you will make a diagnosis. Depending on the results, you will either prescribe medication, complementary tests – such as blood test, x-ray, MRI, and so on – or refer your patient to a specialized doctor – cardiologist, psychologist, or pediatrician, for instance. As a doctor, you will have to perform some treatments – such as putting a dressing, make a vaccine or stitching small wounds.
It is possible to work in many different places – as a general practitioner in Luxembourg – in the private or public sector. Your work environment can indeed be a hospital, clinic, retirement home, your own office, private office, humanitarian organization, or childcare center. You may also work as a medical officer in the occupation health field. You can find your potential future employer in the following list: the CHL (the Luxembourg Hospital Center), Médecins sans Frontières, the Service de Santé au Travail Multisectoriel (STM), just to give a few examples.
In order to apply for a doctor’s position, you must hold a PhD from the State as a medical doctor. The training course to become a doctor lasts 9 years in total – including 3 years of internship in a hospital. If you want to work as a doctor in Luxembourg, you must have your degrees recognized – as doctor is one of the regulated jobs. Recently graduated doctors carry out shifts – they associate with more experienced doctors – perform medical emergencies – night, weekend, holidays – or are substitutes for a longer or shorter period.
