An automotive expert or vehicle damage assessor is a professional in the sector. It's an exciting job with many aspects of insurance. In the case of a car accident or a claim on a vehicle in general, he/she is the one who assesses the damage, who is able to understand the causes of the problem(s), and finally determine the responsibilities, or even play the role of arbitrator, especially in the case of reimbursement.
Often the car expert is an independent. He is the link between the insurance company, the insured and the repairer. But he/she can also work as an employee in an expert's office, an insurance company or a company offering car leasing. In Luxembourg, it is in these last two categories that recruitment and job offers are most common, for example at AXA, Foyer, LaLux or at Arval, ALD, Leaseplan or Autopolis. It also operates on the second-hand market, buying and selling, to check that the vehicle meets the safety standards in force, to give advice to customers and to establish a final price.
The position certainly involves many administrative tasks, including the preparation of files or expert reports. The automotive expert must also have good interpersonal skills and be a bit of a psychologist in order to establish good relations between the various players involved.
Recruiters in Luxembourg will be sensitive to the technical skills required in the mechanical - electrical - automation fields. Ideally, you should have at least one year experience in car repair to be eligible for the position. They will also tend to favour applications from people with a good knowledge of insurance and liability laws, as well as the driving licence.
By following training courses, it is possible to move on to a position in Quality or Sales Manager in the automotive sector. If you think this job is for you, go for it... and take your chance!
