As a financial controller, your main assignment is to take care of the financial management of a company and help it to be more profitable. You will develop budget estimates in order to manage the treasury, establish tools – overviews and indicators, for instance – and analyze the results obtained. You will also need to implement actions to improve the situation and follow up depending on the results. As a financial controller, you will have to carry out financial and economic studies.
The crisis does not affect this job – which is open to junior profiles – in Luxembourg. As financial controller, you can carry out your work in all types of companies and business sectors. However, your position may vary according to the size of the company. In an SME, you will have to carry out several different assignments – such as management control, accounting and taxation, personnel management, administration or IT. Whereas in big companies, the financial controller is more specialized and must have a good financial background. In addition, they often work with accountants.

To become a financial controller, you need to have at least a master's degree or another diploma obtained at a business school with a specialization in finance, management control and audit or at a political studies institute. Knowing the IFRS standards and speaking English is required to work in Luxembourg. The financial controller may also work as an auditor – as these two jobs are pretty similar – or work within a larger company. You may also want to evolve towards a position of responsibility – namely Management Control Director, Chief Financial Officer or Director of Internal Audit.
