HI is an independent international non-governmental aid organisation that has been working for over 40 years in situations of poverty and exclusion, conflict and disaster. Working alongside people with disabilities and vulnerable people, it acts and speaks out to meet their essential needs and improve their living conditions. Since it was founded in 1982, Handicap International has set up development programmes in over 60 countries and responded to numerous emergency situations. Handicap International was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize in 1997 for its fight against anti-personnel landmines.
Educational, social and economic inclusion is one of the major causes defended by our NGO. The recognition of disabled people as equal citizens and the promotion of their status within their families and communities are at the heart of our concerns. To enable them to be fully integrated, our teams work to ensure that they have access to social, educational, professional, sporting, civic and cultural activities, etc.
In Luxembourg, we carry out educational and awareness-raising work in schools, but also within companies. We offer workshops on the inclusion of people with disabilities. For example, participants can experience life with a prosthesis through an obstacle course and understand the challenges associated with vision problems by wearing visual impairment masks. We also organise seminars, debates and exhibitions on the theme of inclusion.
We also run campaigns aimed at the general public, such as the #BeInclusive campaign.
