Summer at the office: how should you dress when it's (really) hot?

Finding an outfit that suits us for a day at the office is never easy… and when temperatures start soaring, the challenge becomes even greater! They may say clothes do not make the person, but in the workplace, dressing appropriately certainly matters.

And since swimwear is unlikely to become the next office uniform anytime soon (and pool days would lose some of their appeal), here are all our tips for staying office-friendly, even when the thermometer is going through the roof.

Basic rules for surviving the heat

You already know this, but it never hurts to repeat it: hot weather does not mean wearing fewer clothes! So, put away overly revealing pieces, plunging necklines, and dresses, skirts, or shorts that are too short. For men, vest tops are also best avoided.

It is also worth forgetting the idea that long clothing is automatically warmer than short clothing. In reality, it is all about the combination of garments… and, most importantly, of fabrics.

The importance of fabrics: let your skin breathe!

Your parents may have told you this when you were younger, or perhaps you have read it countless times in summer magazines on the beach, and for good reason: it has been proven that some fabrics are far more suitable and comfortable during heatwaves than others.

Synthetic fabrics, which are derived from petroleum (such as polyester and elastane), and man-made fibres created through chemical processes (such as viscose and lyocell), are now found in most of our clothing. However, synthetic fabrics tend to trap heat and increase sweating. As for man-made fibres, they create lightweight, breathable fabrics but offer limited temperature-regulating properties.

The ideal solution? Choose garments made from natural fibres such as cotton, linen, or cotton poplin. We love them for their lightness, comfort, and excellent moisture-absorbing qualities. Refreshing feeling guaranteed!

Admittedly, it is not always easy to find clothing made from 100% natural fibres, not to mention the higher price tag. In that case, opt for garments where the proportion of natural fibres is higher than that of synthetic materials.

Staying stylish at the office even in 39°C heat: a guide for women

Now is the time to get creative! This summer, embrace colour: orange, blue, lavender and more. Consider the following:

  • Dresses: airy and stylish, there is something for everyone: shirt dresses, midi dresses, straight-cut styles, shorter lengths (without being too short), loose-fitting designs, pencil dresses, wrap dresses... Whatever your mood, they are undoubtedly among the easiest and most comfortable outfits to wear.
  • Wide-leg trousers: forget skin-tight jeans and opt for looser cuts instead (even better for enjoying the occasional breeze!). Pair them with a sleeveless top and you will stay comfortable all day long.
  • Flowing jumpsuits: trouser or shorts jumpsuits are perfect for slightly cloudier days. Pair them with elegant flat shoes or wedge sandals for those willing to add a little height.
  • The oversized shirt look: borrowing an oversized shirt from your partner works brilliantly too! Roll up the sleeves and pair it with a blazer for the cooler morning temperatures, you will look effortlessly stylish. (To avoid any 6:30 a.m. disagreements, make sure it is not the shirt they were planning to wear that day 😉.)
  • Skirts and shorts: the ultimate summer staples. When time is short in the morning, simply reach for your favourite skirt or pair of shorts. Add a plain black or white vest top and you are ready to go.
  • Footwear: treat yourself to a new pair of flat sandals, elegant wedges, or timeless gladiator sandals this summer. They will see you through the entire season.

Gentlemen, your office dress code for the summer

For men, adapting office attire during the warmer months can sometimes be more challenging. Here are our suggestions:

  • Rethinking the suit: if a suit is required at work, try separating the pieces. Mix fabrics and colours. For example, pair beige chino trousers with a smart linen shirt.
  • Choosing the right shirt: looser-fitting shirts are very much on trend. Avoid tight-fitting synthetic shirts during summer. The ideal options? Chambray, linen, modal, or lightweight cotton voile shirts for a relaxed look, and cotton poplin shirts for a more professional appearance while remaining comfortable.
  • Bermuda shorts, when appropriate: although Bermuda shorts are not suitable for every workplace, if your company allows them, keep the look smart. Avoid shell or palm tree prints unless you want to startle your colleagues first thing in the morning. Instead, choose elegant plain colours. Pair them with a smart shirt rather than an overly casual T-shirt, and pay attention to the length. The perfect cut? Just above the knee.
  • Loafers: loafers are a timeless sign that summer has arrived. They work equally well with a suit or tapered trousers (slightly rolled up at the ankle for extra style points).
