How can you access training without spending too much? That's the question we asked ourselves at Moovijob.com. Whether you live in Luxembourg or commute across the border, if you work in the Grand Duchy and want to develop your skills or receive training, the state may be able to help. Here's how.

Who should you contact?

Luxembourg offers various ways to help companies provide access to training. The public body responsible for co-financing continuing professional training is the Institut National pour le développement de la Formation Professionnelle Continue (INFPC).

Its role is to develop strategies and plans for professional training through conferences, seminars, articles and projects, in collaboration with various partners, including companies, institutions, social organisations and ministries. The aim is to help you find the training approach best suited to your needs and co-finance it in partnership with your company.

Who is eligible, and how much is co-financed?

Any private company established in Luxembourg that carries out all or most of its activities in the country can apply for co-financing. Employees must meet just two criteria: they must be affiliated with Luxembourg's social security system (CCSS) and have an employment contract with a company (for a fixed or indefinite term).

Good to know:

If you do not hold a state-recognised qualification and have been with your company for less than 10 years and/or are over 45 at the start of the training plan, the state's financial contribution increases to 35% of the total amount invested in training.

Your company can estimate the financial assistance it may be eligible for using the online co-financing calculator provided by Lifelong Learning, available on the website lifelong-learning.lu.

As a general rule, co-financing amounts to 15% of the total amount invested in training over one year. This contribution is taxable and capped according to the number of employees:

  • 1 to 9 employees: 20% of the total annual payroll;
  • 10 to 249 employees: 3% of the total annual payroll;
  • More than 249 employees: 2% of the total annual payroll.

How do you choose the right training course?

There are countless training courses available in Luxembourg across a wide range of fields. For example, you could choose a course in management, personal development, stress management or foreign languages. Training is also available across all sectors, including IT, finance, sales, construction, human resources, healthcare, and mechanics.

Training courses are generally classified according to their duration. Short courses last up to 15 hours, medium-length courses up to 70 hours, and long courses more than 70 hours.

To find a course that suits your needs, it's important to explore online training catalogues, such as the one provided by Lifelong Learning. You should also discuss your training needs with your employer, manager or a member of the HR team.
