About the Laboratoire national de santé
The LNS is a major player in Luxembourg’s healthcare sector, serving the country’s patients, doctors and hospitals. Under the supervision of the Ministry of Health and Social Security, the LNS is a multidisciplinary public institution organized around six medical departments, two of which are designated as national diagnostic centers for human genetics and pathology respectively.
The LNS employs around 400 highly qualified staff with diverse backgrounds. The main purpose of the LNS is to develop analytical activities and scientific expertise relating to the prevention, diagnosis and monitoring of human diseases; to act as a national control or reference laboratory; and to carry out forensic missions. The LNS also collaborates with the University of Luxembourg and other biomedical research institutions, both nationally and internationally, on research and teaching activities.
In particular, in the field of diagnostics, the LNS covers the following fields of application: medical biology, microbiology, forensic medicine, environmental medicine, morphological and molecular pathology, and clinical genetics, as well as sequencing for rare diseases, oncology and pathogens.
ABOUT THE DEPARTMENT OF MICROBIOLOGY
The Department of Microbiology at the LNS has around 50 employees and is divided into three departments:
- Bacteriology, Mycology, Antibiotic Resistance and Hospital Hygiene.
- Virology and Serology
- Sequencing of pathogens
The Department of Microbiology offers reference laboratory activities in partnership with various other public and private laboratories in the country.
RESPONSABILITIES
The Department of Microbiology is recruiting for a Clinical Scientist to work full time in the EU co-funded project, EU-JAMRAI 2 (https://eu-jamrai.eu/) and thus to support national surveillance efforts for antimicrobial resistance (AMR). The candidate will act to connect planned genomic surveillance initiatives designed within the project into implementation at the national level in Luxembourg.
In the framework of the LNS reference lab activities for foodborne pathogens and AMR diagnostics and surveillance, the candidate will be responsible for the implementation of a complete workflow developed for plasmid analysis and will be in charge of:
- Creating and structuring a plasmid database for AMR surveillance purpose;
- Investigating AMR dissemination dynamics within One Health settings;
- Extending the new comprehensive plasmid characterization workflow to support investigations into healthcare-associated infections;
- Integration into the national AMR surveillance system.
PROFILE
- PhD in biology, microbiology, bioinformatics or similar discipline, with at least 2 years of experience in pathogen genomics
- Experience in AMR/pathogen surveillance is an asset
- Experience in NGS applications including both wet and dry laboratory aspects
- Proven track record in project management and deadline compliance
- Language skills: Fluency in French and English ¨
