Luxembourg continues to turn heads! In 2024, the country proudly sent 13 athletes to the Paris Olympic Games. In 2025, from Cannes to Osaka via Switzerland, the Grand Duchy is once again shining on the international scene.
Cannes Film Festival: Luxembourg under the spotlight
This year, Luxembourg is pulling out all the stops on la Croisette! Two Luxembourg co-productions are making waves at the Cannes Film Festival: “Un Simple Accident”, a drama by Jafar Panahi in competition for the Palme d’Or, and “Marcel and Monsieur Pagnol”, an animated film featured in a special screening. Both films bear the signature of Bidibul Productions, a key player in the Luxembourg film industry.
Behind the scenes, local talent is equally present in the animation sector: Doghouse Studio and Philophon played a major role in bringing the nostalgic and tender world of Marcel Pagnol to life.

From 13 to 22 May, the Film Fund Luxembourg (the national fund for audiovisual production) is making a strong showing in the International Village with its pavilion hosting producers, studios, technicians and cultural institutions. Since 2012, the Film Fund has supported audiovisual productions through loans for scriptwriting, development, production, co-production and distribution of fiction, animation, documentaries, short films and more.
A new addition to this year’s festival is Cannes Immersive, a competition highlighting outstanding immersive, collective and interactive works that use cutting-edge technologies such as virtual reality, augmented reality and AI. Luxembourg is proudly represented with “The Dollhouse”, a virtual reality experience co-produced by Wild Fang Films, a Luxembourg-based film and XR production company.
Luxembourg’s presence doesn’t stop there. The festival is having a Focus Luxembourg segment, with no fewer than five immersive works selected: “Battlefield” (Digital Voodooh), “Ceci est mon cœur” (a_BAHN), “Floating with Spirits” (Tarantula Luxembourg), “Ito Meikyū” (Les Films Fauves) and “Oto's Planet” (Skill Lab).
And Luxembourgish talent also shines in front of the camera! Vicky Krieps stars in “Love Me Tender”, which is screening in the selection for Un Certain Regard.
This year, Luxembourg isn’t just watching from the sidelines, it’s confidently striding down the red carpet!
Eurovision 2025: Luxembourg brings the show (but not the trophy)
Second on stage this year was young Laura Thorn, who kicked off the evening in style! Her track “La poupée monte le son”, a playful nod to the iconic “Poupée de cire, poupée de son” by France Gall (who won for Luxembourg 60 years ago), won over fans with nearly a million streams on Spotify in recent days. With polished staging and a strong performance, Thorn delivered flawlessly.
Despite the crowd-pleasing performance, Luxembourg finished 22nd out of 26, with 47 points (23 from juries and 24 from the public). It’s a bit of a letdown, especially after last year’s 13th place, a strong comeback following a 31-year absence. Seems like “the nostalgia effect” has already worn off. Jury points came from the Netherlands, Ukraine, Israel and Austria.
Austria ultimately took home the trophy with JJ’s powerful ballad “Wasted Love”, which captured hearts (and votes) to the tune of 436 points.

World Exposition 2025: Luxembourg makes hearts beat in Osaka
For its 25th participation in a World Expo, Luxembourg is arriving in Osaka with a pavilion that’s as charming as it is meaningful: “Doki Doki – The Luxembourg Heartbeat”. In Japan, “doki doki” mimics the sound of an excited, joyful heartbeat, exactly what visitors can expect to feel in this one-of-a-kind space.
Designed as an immersive experience in three acts, the pavilion includes:
- A virtual and physical encounter with Luxembourgers, showcasing the diversity of everyday life and professions in the country.
- An interactive arcade-style ideas lab, highlighting Luxembourg’s commitments to building a more sustainable future.
- A moment of serenity in a suspended net within a fully immersive room, surrounded by panoramic projections of Luxembourg’s most stunning landscapes and cultural treasures.
The visit ends in a courtyard, an oasis where guests are invited to experience Luxembourg’s hospitality with local specialities.
The pavilion itself is an eco-statement: circular architecture, reusable materials and zero carbon footprint. It embodies the Grand Duchy’s creativity, sustainability and open-mindedness!
Under the Expo’s overarching theme, “Designing Future Society for Our Lives”, Luxembourg’s vision of a connected, multicultural and sustainable future fits seamlessly. With 160 countries participating and 28 million visitors expected before 13 October, this global showcase offers an invaluable platform to highlight the country’s talents, culture and innovation.
