After 40 months of construction and a total cost of 100 million euros, Luxembourg’s public transport network is expanding! This extension marks a new milestone in the evolution of public transport in Luxembourg. Moovijob.com tells you everything about the latest tram developments and public transport in the country.

A tram towards the airport

Good news for passengers: since Sunday, 2 March, the tram now directly connects to Luxembourg International Airport. As a reminder, the tram was inaugurated in December 2017 in the Kirchberg district. This extension serves a key area for workers, travellers, and residents, offering an efficient and eco-friendly alternative to other means of transport.

The route follows a new section running alongside the Grünewald forest before crossing the Findel business area and finally reaching the airport. This extension includes two new stops: "Senningerberg, Héienhaff" and "Findel – Luxembourg Airport".

Regarding the schedule, the service runs every day of the week, including weekends and public holidays.

  • First departure from "Stadion" stop to the airport: 4am
  • Last departure from "Stadion": 0am
  • First departure from the airport: 5:03am
  • Last departure from the airport: 0:06am

The tram now operates over a total distance of 16.2 kilometres and serves 24 stops. For this extension, a 110-metre-long viaduct was built over the A1 motorway. At this point, the tram accelerates up to 70 km/h, compared to 50 km/h on the rest of the way, thus reducing overall travel time.

100% free public transport since 2020

Since 1 March 2020, Luxembourg has become the first country in the world to make its public transport completely free, an initiative aimed at encouraging its use and reducing road congestion.

And this strategy seems to be paying off! Since its launch in 2017, the tram has been used by 110.8 million people. Before this new extension, 110,000 passengers used this transport mode daily. With the addition of the stops to the airport, Luxtram expects 10,000 additional users per day.

For comparison, before the introduction of free public transport in Luxembourg, the tram carried 4.7 million passengers during its first year. In 2024, this number has surged to 31.7 million passengers!

Thanks to this extension and the free transport policy, the tram continues to improve mobility in Luxembourg by offering a fast, convenient, and environmentally friendly alternative.
