On July 8th 2024, Girls in Tech Luxembourg announced its rebranding to WeSTEM+ (Women Excel in STEM), reflecting their expanded mission and commitment to empowering underrepresented groups in all STEM fields. After two successful years of fostering talents and innovation within the technology sector under the umbrella of the world known brand Girls in Tech, this evolution marks a new chapter in their journey to support and inspire women and underrepresented groups in Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics.

They are very grateful for having been part of one of the oldest and most respected global initiatives to empower women in tech. This decision follows the global closure of the Girls in Tech brand due to financial difficulties faced by the headquarters. They said that this was not a light decision, but it was the right course of action to ensure the continued pursuit of their mission to close the gender gap in STEM fields.

"I am incredibly proud of what we have achieved over the past two years. WeSTEM+ represents not just a change in name but a bold affirmation of our commitment to innovation, inclusivity, and excellence. We are seizing a fantastic opportunity to showcase to our community the incredible potential we all have when we come together." Vasilki Moschou – Co-Founder.

About WeSTEM+

WeSTEM+ builds on the foundation laid by Girls in Tech Luxembourg, extending the focus to encompass a broader range of STEM disciplines. The goal is to create a more inclusive community where women and other underrepresented groups can excel in any STEM field, whether they are just starting their careers or are seasoned professionals. And to keep the legacy of Girls in Tech, they will be part of a global network of talented STEM professionals invested in helping underrepresented minorities to join the STEM sector.

Key highlights

  1. Expanded mission: WeSTEM+ aims to support women and other underrepresented groups across all STEM fields (represented by the “+”), providing resources, mentorship, technical trainings and networking opportunities to help them succeed and lead in their chosen careers.
  2. Inclusive community: by broadening their scope, they seek to foster a more diverse and inclusive environment, welcoming minorities from all backgrounds, religions, sexual orientations, genders, races, and disciplines within STEM.
  3. Enhanced programs and events: WeSTEM+ will continue to offer high-quality programs and events, including workshops, speaker series, hackathons, and mentorship programs, now tailored to a wider audience within the STEM community.
  4. Collaborative initiatives: they keep the support of their current sponsors and partners and will strengthen partnerships with educational institutions, corporations, and other organizations to create more opportunities for in STEM and to address the unique challenges these minorities face.

Some statements from the board

"What drives me the most is the strength and dynamism of this beautiful community. It needs support to further connect with its Luxembourgish ecosystem, yet no Luxembourgish startup has managed to grow from 0 to 350 members in such a short time. I’m proud to be part of this adventure." Arnaud Clement – Advisory Board Member.

"The WeSTEM+ community empowers women to transition into IT roles through comprehensive training and mentorship. By offering IT bootcamps, career workshops, and networking opportunities, they bridge the gender gap in tech. Their dedicated mentors guide participants through the challenges of entering a male dominated field, ensuring they gain the confidence and skills needed for success. With a commitment to diversity and inclusion, this community is transforming lives and strengthens the tech industry by fostering a new generation of talented female IT professionals." Jerome Huggup – Advisory Board Member.
