Luxembourg may not be the most popular country in cinema and television, but it is nevertheless mentioned on numerous occasions in different works. Here is a non-exhaustive list of some of the times when Luxembourg has shone all the way to Hollywood and far beyond.
Breaking Bad
Perhaps the most popular television series of all time! That is no small achievement. Luxembourg is mentioned in episode 10 of season 4. In this episode, the crooked lawyer Saul Goodman informs his client that his distant aunt living in Diekirch (pronounced Die-Kirk) has died and left him a substantial inheritance, solving his financial problems. The aunt in question obviously does not exist. Her fortune even less so, but fortunately, Luxembourg certainly does!

The Simpsons
In an episode parodying the Football World Cup in Brazil, the opening match pits the hosts against the Luxembourg national team. The problem? The entire population of Luxembourg has come to watch the match. During the game, a burglar is seen leaving a Luxembourg bank with a bag full of money, as there was no one left to guard it. A playful way of poking fun at the country’s size, which is seen as minuscule by Americans.
An occasion to remind us that Luxembourg may be small in size, but it is big in opportunities.

Starsky & Hutch (the film)
During the meeting between the two heroes and Huggy (Snoop Dogg), his gang and his iguana, the gangsters tell them they do not have permits for their firearms. They then add: "We govern ourselves, think of us like Luxembourg", explaining that Luxembourg is a constitutional monarchy in Europe with its own laws and its own way of operating. A comparison that is, this time, more flattering and rather amusing!
Mission Impossible: Dead Reckoning
Now there’s a recent film! In this instalment of the saga, it is mentioned that an envelope has been left in a café in Luxembourg for a secret transaction. Proof that Luxembourg may be home to a vast criminal network… in addition to its thousands of job offers (legal ones, of course).
Malcolm in the Middle
In the sitcom that shaped more than one person’s childhood, Luxembourg is briefly mentioned in passing during a conversation. At a party organised by the brothers Malcolm and Reese, some girls from the Netherlands get bored and leave. As they go, they say to them, "If we wanted to be bored, we could go to Luxembourg". Ouch…
