We are looking for a Modeling Researcher intern for 6 months which will be supported later by a PhD.

 

Topic:

To develop a three dimensional model for Near-Zero CO2 emission blast furnace.

 

Reducing CO2 emissions has become a significant challenge in ironmaking, particularly in the blast furnace process. To enhance operational performance and reduce CO2 emissions, innovative technologies and approaches are necessary. Injecting hydrogen-rich gases and electrifying the blast furnace can significantly reduce CO2 emissions.

Cost-effective mathematical modeling is crucial for understanding the impact of these innovations on the blast furnace process. This internship/PhD project focuses on detailed modeling of a blast furnace with superheated H2-rich gas injection, operating with minimal coke usage.


Your main tasks (during internship):

  • Optimize the Paul Wurth blast furnace model.
  • Discretize the governing equation in three dimensions.

Your main tasks (during PhD):

  • Develop a three-dimensional model for a near-zero CO2 emission blast furnace.
  • Couple the developed model with the existing burden distribution model.
  • Develop a surrogate model.

What do we expect?

  • A master’s degree in computational engineering, Chemical, or Process Engineering or Metallurgical Engineering or related discipline
  • Experience in numerical modelling and parallelization
  • Experience in programming (C or C++, Julia)
  • Experience in machine learning
  • Good knowledge of CFD, heat, and mass transfer
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills
  • Proficiency in English (Knowledge of French, German or Luxemburgish are considered an asset).
